Bruce Connew

Bruce Connew is one of Aotearoa New Zealand's most respected photographers and artist publishers. For more than five decades his work has explored questions of identity, memory, place, politics, and the human condition through photography, text, and the artist book.

Working across documentary and conceptual approaches, Connew's projects often emerge from long periods of observation and reflection. His photographs reveal both the extraordinary and the everyday, drawing attention to the complexities of social and cultural life with curiosity, empathy, and a distinctive visual language.

Alongside his photographic practice, Connew has developed an acclaimed body of artist books through Vapour Momenta Books, the independent publishing imprint he shares with designer and artist Catherine Griffiths. These publications are conceived as artworks in their own right, where image, text, typography, and material form come together as a unified whole.

His work asks us to look more closelyβ€”at landscapes, histories, communities, and ourselves.

Material Matter is pleased to present a curated selection of publications and works by Bruce Connew.
