Masami

Masami / Julie Puddick
Tairāwhiti Gisborne, Aotearoa

Julie Puddick is the designer behind Masami, a practice centred on cloth, cut, and the quiet tension between softness and structure. Working from Tairāwhiti Gisborne, she produces limited collections shaped by hand—each piece guided by the nature of the material itself.

Fabric is the starting point. Sourced from vintage stores, specialist mills, and found textiles, each cloth carries its own weight, drape, and history. From this, form emerges—through folding, shaping, and a process of attentive making.

Garments hold a duality: fluid yet precise, softened by movement and anchored by sharp, deliberate tailoring. There is an underlying influence of Japanese design—seen in the restraint, the space within the silhouette, and the considered use of volume.

Working alongside local makers and embroiderers, Puddick’s practice remains grounded in place. The pace and openness of her coastal environment are reflected in the work—unforced, responsive, and quietly resolved.

Masami pieces are made for everyday wear, yet carry a sculptural presence—where gesture, material, and construction are held in balance.
